2026 has been a year of celebration for Roger Federer. In August he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, and in September the Laver Cup returned to The O2 in London, where he played his final match in 2022.

Early Years: A Talent From Basel

Federer grew up in Basel and showed huge promise as a junior, winning the Wimbledon boys' singles title in 1998, the year he turned professional. In 2001 he announced himself at senior level by beating Pete Sampras in five sets in the fourth round at Wimbledon, ending the American's 31-match winning run at the All England Club.

The Breakthrough: King of Wimbledon

In 2003 Federer won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, and it opened the floodgates. He won five Wimbledons in a row from 2003 to 2007 and five straight US Opens from 2004 to 2008. He became world number one in February 2004 and held top spot for a record 237 consecutive weeks.

The Peak: Completing the Set

In 2009 Federer won the French Open, completing a career Grand Slam, then added a sixth Wimbledon a month later. He won Olympic doubles gold with Stan Wawrinka in 2008 and singles silver in London in 2012, the same summer he won his seventh Wimbledon. In 2014 he helped Switzerland win the Davis Cup.

Later Career: The Late Renaissance

Many thought his Grand Slam days were over, but in 2017 Federer won the Australian Open and an eighth Wimbledon. He won a sixth Australian Open in 2018, taking his total to 20, and that February became the oldest ATP world number one at 36. He played his last match at the 2022 Laver Cup in London.
