Raised on Kauai, Irons brought explosive rail surfing and formidable competitive intensity to the world tour. He won three consecutive world championships from 2002 to 2004, repeatedly defeating Kelly Slater and creating one of surfing's greatest rivalries. Pipe Masters, Triple Crown and elite-event victories proved his range in the heaviest waves. His life and struggles continue to inform the work of the Andy Irons Foundation, which supports young people facing mental-health and addiction challenges.
