Clyde Best, Bermudian pioneer and West Ham favourite
Clyde Best travelled from Bermuda to England as a teenager and joined West Ham United in the late 1960s. A strong, mobile centre-forward, he played alongside Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Trevor Brooking and scored important First Division goals. He also endured racist abuse at a time when very few Black players were established in the English top flight.
Best's success helped challenge prejudices and opened imaginative space for the players who followed. His career later crossed the Atlantic, including a spell with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and a decisive goal in their 1975 championship victory. He also represented Bermuda and returned to coaching.
