Beckenbauer was born in Munich in 1945 and joined Bayern Munich's youth system as a teenager, making his debut in 1964. He spent eleven seasons at Bayern and dominated German football across that period, winning four Bundesliga titles and three consecutive European Cups between 1974 and 1976. He was a defender by position but he transformed what that position could mean, moving forward from the back to influence matches as an attacker in a way that no defender of his era attempted. He was voted the Ballon d'Or in 1972 and 1976. He captained West Germany to the World Cup in 1974 on home soil and captained them to the final in 1966, where they lost to England.
As a manager he surpassed what he had achieved as a player. He took West Germany to the 1986 World Cup Final and then guided a reunified Germany to the World Cup in 1990 in Italy, beating Argentina 1-0 in the final in Rome. He is the only individual to have lifted the World Cup both as a captain and as a manager. He returned to Bayern as president and continued to shape German football at the highest level until his passing in January 2024 at the age of 78.
