Milla was born in Yaounde, Cameroon, in 1952 and came through Cameroonian football before spending most of his club career in France, playing for Valenciennes, Monaco, Bastia, Saint-Etienne and Montpellier among others. He was already a Cameroon international hero when Italia 90 began. President Paul Biya personally requested that he be included in the squad despite his semi-retirement. He came on as a substitute in multiple matches, scored four goals including two against Romania and two against Colombia - the second of which came after his famous theft of the ball from Higuita - and danced at the corner flag after each goal in a celebration that became one of the images of that summer.
He was 38 years and 320 days old when he scored at that tournament, the oldest scorer in World Cup history at the time. He broke his own record at the 1994 World Cup when he scored at 42.
