The squad was built around intelligence, determination and a core of players who had grown up through the English game. Gordon Banks stood behind one of the most disciplined defences in tournament history. Bobby Charlton drove forward from midfield with a force that opponents could barely contain. And Bobby Moore captained the side with a calmness and authority that made him the most admired player on the pitch across the entire tournament.

The group stage came and went. Quarter-finals. Semi-finals. And then the final itself, against West Germany at Wembley. England took the lead through Hurst, went behind, took the lead again through Martin Peters. With seconds left, West Germany equalised to force extra time. What followed became one of the most debated and celebrated passages of play in sporting history. Geoff Hurst struck the crossbar with an effort that bounced down on or near the goal line.
