The story behind the title

Stanley Kubrick wrote, directed and produced the 1971 film from Anthony Burgess's 1962 novel. Malcolm McDowell's Alex leads a violent gang through a stylised near-future Britain before undergoing the state's experimental Ludovico conditioning. The film's invented Nadsat slang, wide-angle imagery, electronic treatment of classical music and precise production design made it instantly identifiable. Its treatment of violence and free will caused sustained controversy. Kubrick later withdrew it from UK distribution during his lifetime, adding to its complicated cultural history. Keeping the design typographic avoids copying the film's poster language. The title alone is enough for admirers of Kubrick, dystopian cinema and provocative seventies filmmaking.
