The races that made the legend
Aldaniti’s place in racing history rests on far more than one result. The chestnut gelding, trained by Josh Gifford for owner Nick Embiricos, had already shown top-class ability when third in the 1979 Cheltenham Gold Cup and second in the Scottish Grand National. Then a serious leg injury at Sandown threatened to finish his career. He spent more than a year away from racing and returned carrying the uncertainty attached to any fragile chaser. His comeback was carefully managed towards Aintree, with victory in an Ascot trial proving that the old ability remained.
The human half of the story made the 1981 Grand National extraordinary. Jockey Bob Champion had recovered from testicular cancer after treatment that included chemotherapy. Horse and rider therefore arrived at Aintree as two athletes who had been told, in different ways, that their careers might be over. Aldaniti took up the running early, jumped with rhythm and faced a determined challenge from amateur rider John Thorne on Spartan Missile. Champion kept the 10/1 chance going to win by four lengths, creating one of British sport’s most emotional finishes.
The achievement inspired the film Champions, with Aldaniti appearing as himself and John Hurt portraying Champion. It also strengthened the fundraising platform that became the Bob Champion Cancer Trust. Racing supporters remember the red and white colours, Peter O’Sullevan’s call and the welcome that awaited Aldaniti back in Findon. It remains the Grand National story against which sporting comebacks are measured.
Why Aldaniti still matters to racing supporters
Aldaniti means something beyond a National statistic. The image of Bob Champion pushing towards the elbow while Spartan Missile closed belongs to a particular kind of racing memory: fear, hope and disbelief compressed into the final run-in.
