Alex Pereira: a striking journey from kickboxing to the UFC

Alex Pereira has become one of combat sport’s most recognisable Brazilian athletes through a career that spans elite kickboxing and mixed martial arts. Known by the nickname Poatan, he is associated with powerful, precise striking and a calm presence before the contest begins. His journey matters to fans because it connects two worlds of combat sport and demonstrates how a specialist background can shape a fighter’s approach at the highest level. This name-led T-shirt recognises that particular sporting story.

Pereira was born in São Bernardo do Campo, in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Before making his name in mixed martial arts, he built a major kickboxing record and competed for GLORY, one of the leading international kickboxing promotions. He became a champion in two weight divisions there, an achievement that established his reputation as a powerful striker before he entered the UFC. That earlier career is central to understanding the fighter. His movement, range control and ability to land clean punches and kicks were developed over many years in a sport where striking is the entire contest.

Pereira made his UFC debut in 2021. The promotion quickly framed his arrival around his prior kickboxing rivalry with Israel Adesanya, a storyline that carried over from their earlier meetings in the ring. The rivalry gave new MMA viewers an accessible starting point, but Pereira’s own performances soon defined the conversation. At UFC 281 in November 2022, he defeated Adesanya by fifth-round technical knockout to win the UFC middleweight championship. He had reached a world title in MMA after a relatively short run in the organisation, building on years of experience in kickboxing.

His time as middleweight champion was brief, but the next stage showed how adaptable his career could be. Pereira moved up to light heavyweight and won that division’s title in 2023. He then became the first fighter in UFC history to hold championship titles at both middleweight and light heavyweight, a distinction that connected his explosive striking to a broader achievement in the sport. He defended the light heavyweight championship against leading challengers and became known for a measured approach: patient at distance, alert to an opponent’s movements and able to finish a fight with one decisive exchange.

At UFC 313 in March 2025, Magomed Ankalaev defeated Pereira by unanimous decision and took the light heavyweight title. A loss does not erase the significance of Pereira’s earlier title reigns. It is part of the competitive reality of a sport in which champions face elite opponents and every result changes the next opportunity. Pereira remained a major figure in the division and continued to attract attention as a former two-division champion. His popularity also reflects the way international audiences now follow UFC athletes across national borders, with Brazilian supporters and fans around the world recognising his nickname and signature style.

In 2026 Pereira moved into heavyweight competition. At UFC Freedom 250 in June, he fought Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight championship and was stopped in the second round. That result gave the heavyweight chapter a clear starting point and underlined the scale of the challenge involved in moving through weight classes. The change is a meaningful part of his current career, but his history remains broader than any one bout. Fans associate him with the GLORY kickboxing titles, the middleweight championship, the light heavyweight title and the attempt to compete at heavyweight. His career keeps producing new chapters while remaining anchored in the striking skill that first brought him to international attention.

Pereira’s nickname, Poatan, is often translated as “stone hands” and reflects the image of a fighter whose punches can change a contest quickly. His public persona is notably composed, which adds contrast to the intensity of the sport. The pairing of quiet demeanour and explosive action has helped make him recognisable even to casual viewers. Supporters can admire the technical side of his fighting, his progress between organisations and divisions, or the broader story of a Brazilian athlete reaching the top of two major combat sports.

The Players Couture design uses Alex Pereira’s name to celebrate that specific sporting identity. It is independent fan-inspired apparel, not official UFC merchandise and not endorsed by Pereira or the promotion. The design is intended for fans who want to represent a fighter rather than wear an event poster or championship graphic. It suits UFC viewers, kickboxing followers and people who remember the middleweight rivalry that launched his MMA profile. The understated name reference can be worn on fight night, at a gym or as part of everyday casual clothing.

This men’s T-shirt is made from soft ringspun cotton, with a regular fit and crew neck. It is not technical training wear. Pair it with jeans, shorts or joggers, or layer it with a hoodie or casual jacket. It comes in White, Navy, Red, Black and Gray, with sizes S, M, L, XL, 2XL and 3XL. The regular fit is intended for day-to-day comfort. If you are between sizes or prefer a relaxed silhouette, compare the size guide with a T-shirt you already own and consider sizing up.

Each shirt is made to order and printed in the United Kingdom. This reduces the need to hold large quantities of finished pre-printed stock. UK delivery is free. It can make a thoughtful present for a Pereira supporter, a UFC fan or someone who follows kickboxing as well as MMA. Follow the care label, wash inside out with similar colours on a cool cycle, avoid bleach and do not iron directly over the print. Air drying can help protect the garment and its design. The result is a comfortable everyday T-shirt with a clear reference to an athlete whose career has crossed disciplines and weight divisions.

Do you do women's and kids sizes in this Alex Pereira Men's T-Shirt?

Yes we can do this for you. We want our tops to be suitable for everyone. Also for kids we can do this top for kids as well, its just taking a long time to add every product under the kids category, but we will get this done as soon as possible. That shouldn't stop you ordering though, just get in touch contact@playerscouture.com
