The races that made the legend
Arkle is the benchmark by which every great steeplechaser is judged. Bred in Ireland, trained by Tom Dreaper and owned by Anne, Duchess of Westminster, the bay gelding developed an almost telepathic partnership with jockey Pat Taaffe. His rivalry with the powerful English chaser Mill House gave jump racing its defining contest of the 1960s. Mill House had won the 1963 Gold Cup, but Arkle beat him by five lengths at Cheltenham in 1964 and widened the superiority to 20 lengths when retaining the crown a year later.
A third Gold Cup followed in 1966, when Arkle started at 1/10 and won by 30 lengths despite making a serious mistake. Yet level-weight championship races tell only part of his greatness. Handicappers were forced to load him with extraordinary weights: he won two Hennessy Gold Cups carrying 12st 7lb, an Irish Grand National under 12st and a Whitbread Gold Cup while conceding at least 35lb to every rival. He could win from two miles to nearly four, combining speed, stamina and a jumping technique whose occasional crossed forelegs only added to the legend.
Arkle won 27 of 35 races and Timeform rated him 212, still the highest figure awarded to a steeplechaser. Even his defeats could enhance the mythology: he once failed by half a length while conceding 35lb, and completed the 1966 King George with a fractured pedal bone. An injury-curtailed career left racing with the sense that it had witnessed an athlete operating outside normal limits.
Why Arkle still matters to racing supporters
Arkle’s numbers can feel almost abstract until the handicap performances are considered. Racing authorities did not simply rate him superior; they asked him to concede huge amounts of weight to high-class chasers, and he continued to win. The Mill House rivalry gave the public a comparison they could see, before Arkle expanded the gap and effectively competed against the limits of the handicap itself.
