Billy Slater, the modern full-back benchmark

Billy Slater joined Melbourne Storm from North Queensland and developed into one of rugby league's defining full-backs. His acceleration made him a devastating support runner, but his greatness also rested on positioning, communication and the ability to appear at exactly the right point in an attacking move. Across a long NRL career he scored more than 190 tries and became central to Melbourne's sustained success.

Slater won the Dally M Medal, two Clive Churchill Medals and multiple premierships with the Storm. For Queensland he played 31 State of Origin matches during a historic era of Maroons dominance, while Australia selected him more than 30 times and he won the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. After retirement he moved into coaching and guided Queensland in the Origin arena, extending his influence beyond his playing highlights.
