Bobby Charlton survived Munich, won the World Cup, won the European Cup and the Ballon d'Or, and played 758 times for Manchester United. He was one of the greatest players England has ever produced. Charlton joined United as a teenager and was part of the generation of players that Matt Busby built into one of the finest club sides in Europe. After the tragedy of Munich in 1958, he channelled everything into his football and became the most important player in United's history. For England, he was the engine of the 1966 World Cup winning side. He played in every match, scored three times in the tournament and was central to the greatest achievement in English football history. He earned 106 caps for his country and scored 49 international goals, records that stood for decades.
