Bobby Tambling, Chelsea's great goalscorer
Bobby Tambling joined Chelsea as a teenager and made his first-team debut in 1959, scoring in a win over West Ham United. A quick, left-footed forward who could finish from different positions, he became the side's most reliable source of goals through relegation, promotion and the emergence of Tommy Docherty's young team.
Tambling scored 202 competitive goals for Chelsea, a club record that stood until Frank Lampard passed it in 2013. He captained the side and helped win the 1965 League Cup, Chelsea's first major knockout trophy. His seven goals against Aston Villa in 1966 remain a remarkable individual match record. He also represented England, although competition for attacking places limited his international opportunities, and later played for Crystal Palace in the top flight.
