Ian Callaghan joined Liverpool as a teenager in 1960 and made his debut in 1960 under Bill Shankly. What followed was one of the most remarkable one-club careers in English football history — spanning from the Second Division right through to European Cup glory in 1977 and 1978 under Bob Paisley. Along the way he won five league titles and two FA Cups, and was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1974. For England he earned four caps and was part of the 1966 World Cup squad, though injury limited his tournament appearances.
Callaghan left Liverpool in 1978, aged 36, and had brief spells at Swansea, Crewe and Cork before retiring. He is a genuinely unique figure in the club's history — a player who served under Shankly, Paisley and Fagan, witnessed the transformation of Liverpool from a relegated Second Division club into the dominant force in European football, and did so with humility and consistency across 857 appearances.
