Cape Kidnappers, golf on the edge of Hawke's Bay
Cape Kidnappers Golf Course occupies dramatic clifftop land near Napier on New Zealand's North Island. Designed by Tom Doak and opened in 2004, the course uses ridges and deep ravines that run towards the Pacific. Several holes appear to sit on narrow fingers of land, creating photographs that are instantly recognisable to travelling golfers.
The setting is spectacular, but the design is more than a view. Firm ground, exposed wind and strategic angles ask players to choose lines carefully rather than simply attack every flag. The par-five fifteenth, known as Pirate's Plank, is the best-known example, with a fairway running along a high promontory. Cape Kidnappers has consequently become a destination course and a frequent presence in discussions of modern golf architecture.
