Valderrama was born in Santa Marta, Colombia, in 1961 and came to prominence in Colombian football with Deportivo Cali before moving to Europe. He played in France with Montpellier and in Spain with Real Valladolid, bringing his particular brand of playmaking to leagues that had never quite seen anything like him. At Atletico Junior in Colombia, he was at his peak, orchestrating everything from midfield with a range of passing and a reading of space that made him the most talked-about player in the country. He later moved to Major League Soccer in the United States, spending time at Tampa Bay Mutiny, Colorado Rapids and Miami Fusion, where he continued to delight supporters with football that prioritised beauty over everything else.

For Colombia, Valderrama was the heartbeat of a golden era. He captained his country through three World Cups, in 1990, 1994 and 1998, and was central to the team that lit up the 1990 tournament in Italy. He was the orchestrator of one of the most entertaining Colombia sides the world had seen, a team that played with flair, freedom and an attacking spirit that made them everyone's second favourite side. He won the Copa America with Colombia in 1995. He was voted the best player in South America multiple times and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players the continent has ever produced. His recognition by peers and pundits across the world placed him in the conversation with the true greats of South American football.
