Cristiano Ronaldo joined Juventus in the summer of 2018 from Real Madrid, arriving with four Champions League trophies, five Ballon d'Or awards and the most decorated CV in the history of the European game. His three seasons in Turin produced two Serie A titles and 101 goals in 134 appearances — a goals-per-game ratio that confirmed, if confirmation were needed, that the physical decline that rivals had been anticipating for a decade was not yet forthcoming.

Ronaldo's Juventus chapter divided opinion in the way that only his presence tends to. The expectations placed on him — to deliver the Champions League that had eluded the club since 1996 — were ultimately not met, though his individual contributions in European competition were often exceptional. His Serie A performances were, if anything, even better than his critics had anticipated. What he gave Juventus in terms of global attention, commercial growth and domestic goals was extraordinary; what they hoped he would give them in Europe remained just out of reach.
