Cristiano Ronaldo made his Manchester United debut in August 2003 as an 18-year-old from Sporting Lisbon and left in 2009 as the most expensive player in the history of football at that point. In between came three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and the Champions League — but more significant than any trophy was the transformation of Ronaldo from a skilful but inconsistent winger into the most complete attacking player in the world.

The second United chapter, when Ronaldo returned in 2021, was a different story — complicated by the club's situation and ended prematurely. But the first chapter is the one that matters most at Old Trafford: the years under Ferguson where the teenager from Madeira became the best player on earth. His partnership with Wayne Rooney, his free-kick technique, his Champions League final goal in Moscow and the sheer weight of his contribution to United's trophy haul in those six years made him one of the most important players in the club's history.
