David Beckham made his Manchester United debut in 1992, became a Champions League winner in 1999 and was sold to Real Madrid in 2003 — and across those eleven years at Old Trafford he became one of the most recognisable footballers in the history of the sport. His right foot, his delivery from wide areas and his set-piece quality were exceptional; his ability to transcend the sport and become a global cultural figure was something entirely separate from the football and something no player had achieved before him in quite the same way.

The goal from the halfway line against Wimbledon in August 1996 announced Beckham to the country. The treble season of 1999 — when his corner led to Teddy Sheringham's equaliser in the final and his contribution throughout the campaign was central to United's success — confirmed his place in the club's pantheon. He was not always the most naturally gifted of his generation, but his dedication to developing what he had and his ability to deliver in the biggest moments made him one of the most important players of the Premier League era.
