Fernando Torres scored 65 Premier League goals in 102 appearances for Liverpool — a goals-per-game ratio that placed him among the most productive strikers the club has ever signed. His pace, his ability to run in behind the defensive line and his clinical finishing in one-on-one situations made him the most feared centre-forward in England during his three seasons on Merseyside, and his contribution to Liverpool's 2008-09 campaign, which ended just short of the title, was extraordinary.

Torres's relationship with the Anfield crowd was built on the kind of performances that make neutrals watch with particular attention — a player who made goalscoring look like the natural resolution of any chance rather than the difficult proposition it actually is. His goal to put England out of Euro 2008 in the semi-final, scored while playing for Spain against a nation that had just paid £20 million for him, was evidence of a striker who was simply too good for the opposition in front of him. His departure to Chelsea in January 2011, and the goals that dried up immediately after, was vindication enough for the supporters who felt betrayed.
