Frankel’s unbeaten 14-race career combined overwhelming performance with an emotional bond between horse and trainer. Bred by Juddmonte, the son of Galileo was named after American trainer Bobby Frankel and prepared at Warren Place by Sir Henry Cecil. His two-year-old victories established elite ability, but the 2011 2,000 Guineas turned him into a phenomenon. Tom Queally allowed Frankel to use his stride from the start; he opened an enormous lead before halfway and won by six lengths in a display unlike a conventional Classic.
Frankel matured without losing intensity. He defeated older milers in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, won the Lockinge and produced an 11-length Queen Anne victory at Royal Ascot. The 2012 Sussex Stakes brought another effortless success before Cecil extended him to ten furlongs. Frankel answered by crushing a high-class Juddmonte International field at York and then overcoming testing ground to beat Cirrus Des Aigles in the Champion Stakes on his final start.
He retired unbeaten with ten Group 1 wins and an official rating of 140, while Timeform assigned 147—the organisation’s highest figure. The career also offered Cecil, then seriously ill, a final masterpiece and racing an unusually moving partnership. Frankel has since become an elite stallion at Banstead Manor, extending the story through Classic and international winners.
