Galopin Des Champs developed from a Festival-winning hurdler into the defining staying chaser of the mid-2020s. Trained by Willie Mullins for Audrey Turley and most closely associated with Paul Townend, he won the 2021 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle before switching to fences. His novice campaign included dominant Grade 1 wins and one unforgettable setback: clear at the final fence of the 2022 Turners, he crumpled on landing and lost a race that looked secured. The response to that fall revealed the depth of his ability and temperament.
He returned the following season to win the John Durkan, Irish Gold Cup and 2023 Cheltenham Gold Cup, powering seven lengths clear of Bravemansgame. A year later he retained both Irish and Cheltenham crowns, handling a different race shape to defeat Gerri Colombe. A third Irish Gold Cup arrived in 2025. Although Inothewayurthinkin prevented a historic Gold Cup hat-trick that March, Galopin ended the season with a 22-length Punchestown Gold Cup victory that ranked among his most visually commanding performances.
After setbacks and two third-place runs during 2025/26, he missed Cheltenham and was retired in August 2026. His final record stood at 15 wins from 26 starts, including 12 Grade 1s, two Cheltenham Gold Cups and three Irish Gold Cups. Mullins described a kind, reliable horse suited to a second career away from racing—an appealing final note for a champion whose public demeanour was as admired as his stamina.
