Garrincha, born Manuel Francisco dos Santos, remains one of the most loved footballers in history. A legendary right winger, he became famous for his incredible dribbling, balance, flair and unpredictable movement. Nicknamed “The Joy of the People”, Garrincha was a player who made football feel fun, expressive and emotional. At club level, Garrincha is most closely associated with Botafogo, where he spent the peak years of his career and became one of the club’s greatest icons. Internationally, Garrincha was a superstar for Brazil. He represented his country at the 1958, 1962 and 1966 World Cups, winning the tournament in both 1958 and 1962. In 1958, he played alongside Pelé as Brazil captured their first World Cup. In 1962, after Pelé was injured, Garrincha became the leading figure of the tournament, producing unforgettable performances against England and Chile and helping Brazil become world champions again. Across his Brazil career, he earned around 50 caps and scored 12 goals, with his World Cup record including 12 appearances and 5 goals.
