Steven Gerrard spent seventeen years at the club he grew up supporting, led them to the most dramatic comeback in European club football history in Istanbul in 2005, and built a legacy that one name — no number, no badge — is all that is needed to represent.

Steven Gerrard joined Liverpool’s academy at nine years old and made his first-team debut in 1998. He made 710 appearances for the club, scoring 186 goals, and became the only Liverpool player to have scored in a UEFA Cup final, FA Cup final and European club football final. The 2005 European club football final in Istanbul — Liverpool three goals down at half-time against AC Milan, Gerrard’s header starting the comeback that ended with a penalty shootout victory — remains the most discussed match in the history of the competition. He lifted the trophy as captain.
