Richards accumulated 4,870 British winners, a total that remains the domestic record, and rode 269 winners in 1947 alone—then an extraordinary seasonal benchmark.
The Derby was the conspicuous gap in a career overflowing with major prizes. After 27 unsuccessful attempts, Richards finally won at Epsom aboard Pinza in 1953, defeating the Queen’s Aureole and receiving a reception charged with public relief. That same year he became the first jockey appointed a Knight Bachelor while still riding. His Classic record also included three 2,000 Guineas, one 1,000 Guineas, four Oaks and five St Legers.
A serious injury forced retirement in 1954, but Richards remained influential as a racing manager and adviser. The championship trophy now bears his name, ensuring each generation encounters the scale of his achievement. He represents craftsmanship over decades: relentless preparation, sympathetic horsemanship and a winning record built across ordinary meetings as well as Classics.
