Shearer at his most dominant. And then Germany in the semi-final, a 1-1 draw followed by a shootout that ended England's tournament and sent the country into the familiar devastation that the song had captured perfectly before a ball was kicked.
It's coming home has been sung at every tournament since 1996. It was sung at the 1998 World Cup in France. At Euro 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands. At the 2002 World Cup in Japan. Through every exit, every near-miss, every tournament that began with hope and ended with penalty heartache or a quarter-final defeat, the song kept going. It was defiantly relevant at Euro 2020, when England reached the final for the first time since 1966, and at Euro 2024 when they reached the final again. It has become something more than a football song. It is the anthem of English football's eternal optimism in the face of all available evidence.
