Rodriguez was born in Cucuta, Colombia, in 1991 and came through the academy at Banfield in Argentina before moving to Envigado in Colombia. He joined Porto in Portugal in 2010 and quickly established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in Europe. Monaco signed him in 2013 and in his single season at the club he produced 17 goals and 13 assists in Ligue 1, earning him a world-record-at-the-time £63 million transfer to Real Madrid after his astonishing World Cup.

At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Rodriguez was simply the best player in the tournament. He scored six goals including one of the great World Cup goals of the modern era against Uruguay — a first-time volley from outside the area that flew into the top corner. He won the Golden Boot as the tournament's top scorer at the age of 22 and left Brazil as the most talked-about player on the planet. Real Madrid signed him on the back of that tournament and he spent two seasons at the Bernabeu before loan spells at Bayern Munich and Everton.
