His free-kick technique — left-footed, curling, struck with a consistency that most practitioners never approach — produced more direct free-kick goals than David Beckham’s Premier League total, making him the most prolific scorer from that particular skill in the division’s history.

Ward-Prowse’s fifteen seasons on the south coast required him repeatedly to be the best player in a team that needed him to be, and he delivered that consistently. His loyalty through relegation and rebuilding cycles placed him firmly in the club’s pantheon, and his subsequent England recognition confirmed that consistent club form at the highest level had always deserved a wider audience.
