Jean-Pierre Papin won the Ballon d’Or in 1991, having scored 134 goals for Olympique de Marseille across six seasons and helped the club win four consecutive French league titles. His volleying technique was his most celebrated quality — an ability to meet crosses from impossible positions and direct them into the goal with a precision that made the difficult look routine. The verb pappiner entered French football vocabulary to describe exactly that kind of finish.

Papin’s Marseille years were the peak of a career that subsequently took him to AC Milan and Bayern Munich, and the Vélodrome gave him the platform to become the dominant individual in Ligue 1 for the better part of a decade. His subsequent European recognition confirmed that the standard he had set in France was being noticed across the continent.
