Kaká won the Ballon d’Or in 2007 — the last player to break the Messi-Ronaldo duopoly until Modric in 2018 — following a Champions League campaign for AC Milan that many observers considered the finest individual performance in the competition’s recent history. His combination of pace, technical quality and composed finishing made him the most elegant attacking midfielder of his generation.

Kaká’s Milan years produced the Champions League, two Serie A titles and the highest individual honour the game provides. His Christian faith — worn as publicly as his footballing talent — made him one of the more distinctive personalities of his era, and the San Siro gave him the stage that his ability always deserved.
