Kevin Phillips won the European Golden Boot in 1999-2000 with 30 Premier League goals for Sunderland — the only English player and only Premier League player ever to win the award. His partnership with Niall Quinn gave the Stadium of Light the most productive striking combination in the club’s modern history, and his goals drove Sunderland to seventh in the Premier League — the highest finish in the club’s history.

An English striker winning Europe’s highest individual scoring award is remarkable in any era; in the Premier League era it remains unique. Phillips’s movement, his composure in one-on-one situations and the goalscoring instinct that made the Golden Boot season possible gave Wearside supporters a forward of a quality they had never previously seen at the club.
