Earvin 'Magic' Johnson grew up in Lansing, Michigan and arrived in the NBA at 20 — leading the Los Angeles Lakers to the 1980 championship in his first season, playing centre in the deciding game after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was injured, and scoring 42 points. Five championships followed across the decade of Showtime basketball — the fast breaks, the no-look passes, the infectious personality that made every game an event and every moment worth watching.
His announcement in November 1991 that he was HIV positive — in an era when such a diagnosis carried enormous stigma — was a watershed moment in both sport and public health. His return to the court for the 1992 Olympics as part of the Dream Team, and briefly in the 1992 All-Star Game and 1996 season, confirmed a man who refused to let the diagnosis define his legacy. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and has since built a business empire that rivals his playing career in scope and ambition.
