Niall Quinn’s partnership with Kevin Phillips at Sunderland gave the Stadium of Light the most celebrated striking combination in the club’s modern history — Phillips winning the European Golden Boot in 1999-2000 with 30 goals, with Quinn’s hold-up play, aerial presence and intelligent movement creating the space and service that Phillips converted at a record rate.

Quinn’s connection to Sunderland extended beyond his playing years — his involvement in the consortium that bought the club and appointed Roy Keane as manager gave him a second chapter in the city’s football story. The big Irishman gave Wearside goals, assists and loyalty in equal measure.
