Oliver Kahn won the Ballon d’Or in 2002 — the only goalkeeper ever to win the award — following a World Cup in which he kept Germany in the tournament round after round with saves that reflected the most intense competitive will at that summer’s competition. His Bayern Munich career produced eight Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokals and the Champions League in 2001, alongside a personal reputation as the most demanding goalkeeper of his generation.

Kahn’s character — aggressive, utterly intolerant of anything less than maximum effort from those around him — made him a divisive presence in opposition dressing rooms and an inspirational one in his own. The Allianz Arena crowd gave him complete support because he gave them complete commitment in return across seventeen seasons at one club.
