Pepe, full name Kepler Laveran de Lima Ferreira, built a legendary career as one of the most competitive centre-backs of his generation. Born in Brazil and representing Portugal at international level, he began his senior career with Marítimo before moving to Porto, where his aggressive defending, pace, strength and leadership quickly made him one of the most respected defenders in European football. His performances earned him a move to Real Madrid in 2007, where he became part of one of the most successful club sides of the modern era.
At Real Madrid, Pepe won multiple major honours, including La Liga titles, Copa del Rey trophies and three European club football titles. Alongside some of the biggest names in world football, he became known for his intensity, bravery and ability to perform in the biggest matches. After leaving Madrid, he played for Beşiktaş in Turkey before returning to Porto, where he continued to perform at an elite level well into his forties. He retired from professional football after an outstanding career that included Marítimo, Porto, Real Madrid and Beşiktaş.
For Portugal, Pepe became a true national hero. He earned 141 caps and scored 8 goals, making him one of Portugal’s most-capped players. He represented Portugal at multiple major tournaments, including the FIFA World Cups of 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022. He also played a huge role in Portugal’s UEFA Euro 2016 triumph, helping his country win its first major international trophy. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Pepe scored against Switzerland in the knockout stage, becoming one of the oldest goalscorers in World Cup history and adding another unforgettable moment to his international legacy.
