Raúl González scored 323 goals for Real Madrid across sixteen seasons — holding the all-time scoring record at the club until Cristiano Ronaldo eventually surpassed it — and captained the side through two Champions League victories, in 1998 and 2000. His movement in the penalty area, his composure in European knockout matches and his ability to deliver in the matches when the trophy was at stake made him the definitive Real Madrid number seven of his generation and one of the most decorated players in the club's history.

Raúl's Madrid career was defined as much by consistency as by individual brilliance — a striker who scored in every season, in every competition, for sixteen consecutive years without the kind of interruptions that injury and form impose on most players at some point. His 71 Champions League goals were a record for many years, and his captaincy of a squad that included some of the most celebrated players in the world reflected a standing in the dressing room that individual talent and collective service had built in equal measure.
