Secretariat’s 1973 Triple Crown remains one of sport’s clearest expressions of physical greatness. Bred by Meadow Stable, trained by Lucien Laurin and ridden by Ron Turcotte, the massive chestnut was already Horse of the Year at two. In the Kentucky Derby he ran each quarter-mile faster than the previous one and stopped the clock at 1:59⅖, a record that still stands. He then won the Preakness with a devastating move around the first turn.
The Belmont Stakes transformed a champion into an international icon. Secretariat challenged Sham early, accelerated away and continued widening the gap under no pressure. He won by 31 lengths in 2:24 for a mile and a half—a world record on dirt that remains untouched. Turcotte looking across for absent rivals and Chic Anderson calling him “moving like a tremendous machine” became permanent images in racing culture.
Secretariat also defeated older horses on turf and retired with 16 wins from 21 starts. At Claiborne Farm he became an influential broodmare sire, appearing in the pedigrees of A.P. Indy, Storm Cat and many modern champions. A necropsy suggested an exceptionally large heart, fitting the public understanding of a horse whose stride and cardiovascular power seemed beyond the normal scale.

The Belmont remains powerful because there was no rival left to frame the performance. Secretariat competed against time and distance, extending the lead after the race was safe.
