Shane Warne came from Melbourne and made his Test debut for Australia in 1992. The delivery that dismissed Mike Gatting in the first Ashes Test of 1993 at Old Trafford — a leg break that pitched outside leg stump, spun viciously and clipped the top of off — introduced a talent of quite extraordinary proportions to the world. What followed was twelve years of artistry: flighted leg breaks, googlies, sliders and a cricketing intelligence that outmanoeuvred the best batsmen in the world at will.
Warne took 708 Test wickets across 145 Tests — the highest total by any spinner in the history of cricket. He was instrumental in four Ashes series victories and two World Cup wins for Australia. His life off the pitch — the controversies, the tabloid stories, the extraordinary personality — made him as recognisable off the ground as on it. He was named one of Wisden's five Cricketers of the Century, alongside Don Bradman. He died of a cardiac arrest in March 2022 at 52, and the tributes from across cricket reflected a player who was genuinely loved.
