His unique season brought a unanimous American League Most Valuable Player Award. Ohtani continued his two-way excellence in 2022, producing 34 home runs as a hitter and a 15–9 record, 2.33 ERA and 219 strikeouts as a pitcher.
In 2023, he led the American League with 44 home runs while also recording ten pitching victories and 167 strikeouts. Ohtani received another unanimous MVP Award, becoming the first player in major-league history to achieve that voting distinction more than once.
A Historic First Season with the Dodgers
Ohtani joined the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2024 season. He was unable to pitch while recovering from elbow surgery, but his first campaign as a Dodgers hitter became one of the greatest offensive seasons ever recorded.
Ohtani batted .310, hit 54 home runs, stole 59 bases, drove in 130 runs and scored 134 times. He became the first player in major-league history to create a 50-home-run, 50-steal season.
He crossed both milestones during a remarkable game against Miami in which he went six for six with three home runs, two stolen bases and ten runs batted in. The performance also helped Los Angeles secure its postseason place.
Ohtani reached the major-league playoffs for the first time and helped the Dodgers progress through the National League rounds. Los Angeles defeated the New York Yankees in five games to win the World Series, giving him a championship during his first season with the club.
He was unanimously named the National League Most Valuable Player. The award made Ohtani only the second player to win MVP honours in both leagues and the first full-time designated hitter to receive the honour.
Pitching, Hitting and Winning Again in 2025
Ohtani returned to the mound during the 2025 season. The Dodgers carefully managed his workload following surgery, but he still recorded a 2.87 ERA across 14 starts. At the plate, he hit a career-high 55 home runs, scored 146 times and produced a National League-leading 1.014 OPS.
His defining two-way performance arrived during the National League Championship Series against Milwaukee. Ohtani struck out ten batters across six scoreless innings and hit three home runs in the same game. The victory completed a four-game sweep, and he was named Championship Series Most Valuable Player.
The Dodgers faced Toronto in the World Series. During an 18-inning Game 3, Ohtani hit two home runs, added two doubles and reached base nine times. He started Game 4 as a pitcher and was handed the ball again for the decisive seventh game.
Los Angeles won the series 4–3 to retain the World Series championship. Ohtani hit 11 home runs during the complete postseason and recorded 28 strikeouts from 20⅓ innings on the mound, contributing to the title in both parts of his two-way role.
His season brought a fourth unanimous MVP Award. It was his third consecutive MVP, his second in the National League and his fourth across five seasons. Ohtani became the first player to win multiple MVP Awards in both leagues.
Representing Japan on the International Stage
Ohtani has become an international hero through his performances for Japan. His most celebrated national-team achievement came at the 2023 World Baseball Classic, where he contributed as both a hitter and pitcher.
Japan reached the final without defeat and faced the United States. Ohtani entered as a relief pitcher in the ninth inning and eventually faced Mike Trout with two outs and a one-run lead. He struck out his Angels teammate to complete Japan’s championship victory.
