Elbow surgery and other injuries interrupted Ohtani’s early seasons, but his complete two-way ability emerged spectacularly in 2021. He hit 46 home runs, stole 26 bases and recorded 100 runs batted in while also making 23 starts as a pitcher and striking out 156 hitters.
Ohtani was selected for the All-Star Game as both a hitter and pitcher, starting on the mound while also leading off the batting order for the American League. He received every first-place vote for the American League Most Valuable Player Award.
His 2022 campaign demonstrated that the breakthrough could be sustained. Ohtani hit 34 home runs while producing a 15–9 pitching record, a 2.33 ERA and 219 strikeouts. He became the first player in the modern era to qualify for the league leaderboards as both a hitter and pitcher during the same season.
Ohtani won another unanimous American League MVP Award in 2023. He led the league with 44 home runs and produced a 1.066 OPS while also recording ten pitching victories, a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts. He became the first player to receive the award unanimously more than once.
Joining the Los Angeles Dodgers
Ohtani signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers before the 2024 season. Recovering from elbow surgery meant that he could not pitch during his first year with the club, but he responded by producing one of the greatest offensive campaigns in baseball history.
He batted .310 with 54 home runs, 130 runs batted in, 134 runs scored and 59 stolen bases. Ohtani became the first player in major-league history to hit at least 50 home runs and steal at least 50 bases during the same season.
The historic milestone was reached during an extraordinary game in Miami. Ohtani collected six hits, hit three home runs, drove in ten runs and stole two bases. The performance also helped the Dodgers secure a place in the postseason.
Ohtani experienced the major-league playoffs for the first time and helped Los Angeles advance to the World Series against the New York Yankees. The Dodgers won the championship in five games, giving Ohtani his first World Series title during his first season with the club.
He received the 2024 National League Most Valuable Player Award through another unanimous vote. Ohtani became the first full-time designated hitter to win an MVP and joined Frank Robinson as the only players at that time to receive the award in both leagues.
The Return of the Two-Way Star
Ohtani returned to pitching during the 2025 campaign while maintaining an exceptional level of offensive production. He hit a career-high 55 home runs, scored a major-league-leading 146 times and finished with a 1.014 OPS. On the mound, he made 14 starts and recorded a 2.87 ERA as the Dodgers carefully rebuilt his pitching workload.
His most remarkable performance arrived in Game 4 of the National League Championship Series against Milwaukee. Ohtani pitched six scoreless innings, struck out ten hitters and hit three home runs in the same game. The victory completed a Dodgers sweep and sent Los Angeles back to the World Series, with Ohtani named Championship Series Most Valuable Player.
During the World Series against Toronto, Ohtani reached base nine times in an 18-inning Game 3 victory. His performance included two home runs, two doubles and four intentional walks. He then became the starting pitcher for Game 4 and later started the deciding Game 7.
The Dodgers defeated Toronto in seven games to secure consecutive World Series championships. Ohtani completed the postseason with 11 home runs while also contributing as a starting pitcher, adding a second championship ring to his Dodgers career.
He was unanimously voted the 2025 National League Most Valuable Player, his fourth career MVP and third in consecutive seasons. He became the first player to win multiple MVP Awards in both leagues and the only player to receive four unanimous MVP decisions.
A World Baseball Classic Champion with Japan
Ohtani’s international career has added another important dimension to his legacy. He represented Japan at the 2015 WBSC Premier12 before becoming the central figure in the country’s 2023 World Baseball Classic victory.
Japan completed the tournament without defeat and faced the United States in the final. Ohtani entered from the bullpen to protect a one-run lead and faced Angels teammate Mike Trout with two outs in the ninth inning. He struck out Trout to complete the championship victory and was named tournament Most Valuable Player.
Ohtani returned for the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Japan’s attempt to retain the title ended with a quarter-final defeat against Venezuela, but he hit three home runs and drove in seven runs across four games. He was selected as the designated hitter on the tournament team.
