Trevor Francis Nottingham Forest T-Shirt | Players Couture

Trevor Francis became the first £1 million footballer in British history when Brian Clough signed him for Nottingham Forest from Birmingham City in February 1979 — and he repaid the fee by scoring the winning goal in that year's European Cup final against Malmö with a far-post header. The fact that such a precise return on investment was delivered within months of such a landmark fee set a tone for Francis's Forest career that the subsequent seasons were never quite able to match, but that single contribution earned him a permanent place in the club's history.

Francis's time at Forest was interrupted by injury that limited his appearances in the seasons following the European Cup win, but his quality — the pace, the finishing and the technical ability that had made him the most expensive player in the country — was evident whenever he played. His subsequent career at clubs including Manchester City, Sampdoria and Rangers confirmed a forward whose best years produced goals and performances that those who saw them rate as exceptional.
