Zinedine Zidane France Champion T-Shirt | Players Couture Icon Frame Fanwear
Zinedine Zidane lifted the World Cup in Paris in 1998. He followed it with the European Championship in 2000. He retired from football twice, the second time after the 2006 World Cup Final headbutt, and left as the Player of the Tournament despite the red card. His entire career was one long demonstration that genius operates by its own rules. This Zidane France Champion t-shirt from Players Couture celebrates the champion version of one of football's all-time greats. Fan apparel for France supporters who know exactly what Zidane gave their country and their football.
Zinedine Zidane is one of the two or three most gifted footballers who ever played the game. His left foot. His balance. His first touch. His ability to receive the ball under pressure in the tightest of spaces and emerge from it with more control than the situation appeared to allow. He played football as though the ball were an extension of himself, as though the space around him were slightly larger than it appeared to everyone else, as though time moved differently when he had possession. There is no aspect of his play that did not carry the imprint of genius.
Zidane was born in Marseille in 1972, the son of Algerian immigrant parents who came from the Kabylie region. He grew up in the La Castellane housing estate in Marseille and came through Cannes and Bordeaux before Juventus signed him in 1996. He spent five seasons in Turin winning two Serie A titles and reaching the Champions League final twice. Real Madrid paid a then-world-record fee of £47.2 million to sign him in 2001 and at the Bernabeu he produced the most decorated period of his club career. He won La Liga in 2003 and the Champions League in 2002 with a goal in the final against Bayer Leverkusen — a volley from Roberto Carlos's cross that is the greatest goal ever scored in a Champions League final. He won two Ballon d'Or awards and the FIFA World Player of the Year award three times.
For France, Zidane is the defining player of their greatest era. He captained the country to the 1998 World Cup on home soil, scoring twice with headers in the final against Brazil as France won 3-0. He led them to Euro 2000, where they beat Italy in the final with a Trezeguet golden goal after Wiltord equalised in the final seconds. At the 2006 World Cup, approaching retirement and called back from it by the national federation, he was named Player of the Tournament despite headbutting Marco Materazzi in the final and receiving a red card. His career ended in that moment, in extra time of the 2006 World Cup Final, with the tournament's greatest individual player receiving a red card for the most talked-about moment in recent football history. He later returned to management and won three consecutive Champions Leagues as Real Madrid manager, a feat without precedent. Find more from the football fanwear collection at Players Couture.
