From Vault to Screen

The Fallout games began in 1997 with a retro-futuristic 1950s style. Rather than retell any one game, the series tells a new story set in 2296, 219 years after the Great War of 2077.

We meet Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), a cheerful dweller of Vault 33 who heads to the surface to find her father Hank (Kyle MacLachlan). Along the way she crosses paths with Maximus (Aaron Moten), a squire in the Brotherhood of Steel, and the Ghoul (Walton Goggins), a bounty hunter who was once the Hollywood actor Cooper Howard.

The show picked up 17 Emmy nominations for its first season, including Outstanding Drama Series.

Behind the Scenes

The show comes from Kilter Films, the company of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, working closely with Bethesda Game Studios and its game director Todd Howard. Nolan directed the first three episodes, and Ramin Djawadi's score nods to Inon Zur's music from the games, alongside classic songs by The Ink Spots.

Season 1 was filmed in New York, New Jersey and Utah, with desert scenes at Kolmanskop and the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. Production moved to California for season 2, and season 3 is being shot mainly in Los Angeles and Santa Clarita.

New Vegas and Beyond

Season 2 picked up the road to New Vegas, adding Justin Theroux as the mysterious Robert House and Macaulay Culkin as a member of Caesar's Legion. Season 3 was confirmed in May 2025, before season 2 even arrived, and is expected in 2027.
