Early Years: Born Into Boxing
Floyd was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, into a boxing family. His father, Floyd Mayweather Sr., trained him early on, and his uncle Roger later worked his corner too. As an amateur he went 84-8, won three national Golden Gloves titles and took featherweight bronze at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics after a narrow 9–10 semi-final loss.

Breakthrough: "Pretty Boy" Takes Over
He turned pro on 11 October 1996 with a second-round knockout of Roberto Apodaca. Within two years he was a world champion, stopping Genaro Hernández in eight rounds for the WBC super featherweight title in 1998, and The Ring named him Fighter of the Year. Lightweight gold followed against José Luis Castillo in 2002, then Arturo Gatti at light welterweight in 2005 and welterweight titles in 2006.

Peak Years: "Money" and the Mega-Fights
On 5 May 2007 he beat Oscar De La Hoya on a split decision to win the WBC light middleweight title, his fifth weight class. That December he stopped Britain's Ricky Hatton, and later came wins over Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and a young Canelo Álvarez. On 2 May 2015 at the MGM Grand he outpointed Manny Pacquiao to unify the welterweight titles. Around 4.6 million US homes bought it, a pay-per-view record.

50-0 and Beyond
After beating Andre Berto in 2015 to go 49-0, he came back for one more fight. On 26 August 2017 at T-Mobile Arena he stopped UFC star Conor McGregor in the tenth round. That made him 50-0 and took him past Rocky Marciano's famous 49-0. He has since fought eight exhibitions, including Tenshin Nasukawa in 2018 and Logan Paul in 2021. The International Boxing Hall of Fame inducted him in 2021, and in 2025 The Ring named him the greatest pound-for-pound boxer of the 21st century.
