Canelo Álvarez Men’s Hoodie – Mexican Boxing Icon and Four-Division Champion

Represent a four-division champion and one of boxing’s biggest modern stars with the Canelo Álvarez Men’s Hoodie from Players Couture. Designed for fight-night fanatics, Mexican sporting supporters and fans who admire Canelo’s power, body punching and championship ambition, this hoodie celebrates an extraordinary career spanning more than two decades.

A colourful, stylish poster-inspired graphic of Canelo Álvarez is positioned on the left chest. The compact badge format creates a modern alternative to oversized boxing merchandise, giving the hoodie enough character for fight night while keeping it versatile enough for everyday casual clothing.

Saúl Álvarez was born in Guadalajara in July 1990 and grew up in Juanacatlán, Jalisco. His distinctive red hair resulted in the nickname Canelo, meaning cinnamon. The name became one of the most recognisable in international boxing as Álvarez developed from a teenage professional into a global attraction.

Boxing was a family pursuit. Several of the Álvarez brothers competed professionally, giving the youngest member of the family experienced figures to watch and learn from. Canelo began boxing as a child and won medals at Mexico’s Junior National Championships before turning professional at only 15.

Entering professional boxing at such a young age required careful development. Canelo competed frequently in Mexico, learning how to handle different styles and physical challenges. Those early contests helped create the experienced fighter who would later appear so composed beneath the lights of major American arenas.

Álvarez developed an economical style based on balance, defensive upper-body movement and powerful counter-punching. His body attacks became particularly important, slowing mobile opponents and creating openings for combinations to the head.

Light-Middleweight Championship Success

Canelo won his first major world championship against Manchester’s Matthew Hatton in March 2011. The victory gave him the WBC light-middleweight title and began a championship career that would eventually extend across four weight divisions.

He defended the belt against another British challenger, Sheffield’s Ryan Rhodes, securing a twelfth-round stoppage. Victories over Alfonso Gómez and Kermit Cintrón followed before Canelo completed 12 rounds against the great Shane Mosley.

A stoppage of Josesito López led to a unification contest with unbeaten WBA champion Austin Trout in April 2013. Canelo scored the fight’s only knockdown and earned a unanimous decision, demonstrating greater tactical patience alongside his established power.

Five months later, Álvarez faced Floyd Mayweather Jr. The experienced American controlled the distance and handed Canelo his first professional defeat. Rather than damaging his ambition, the experience encouraged further development.

Canelo returned with a stoppage of Alfredo Angulo and a close points victory over the elusive Erislandy Lara. A brutal third-round knockout of James Kirkland then positioned him for a championship opportunity at middleweight.

Defeating Cotto and Facing Britain’s Best

In November 2015, Álvarez defeated Miguel Cotto to win the WBC and Ring middleweight championships. The contest matched two of boxing’s biggest attractions, with Canelo’s combinations and physical strength securing the unanimous decision.

Amir Khan moved up in weight to challenge him in May 2016. Khan’s speed created problems during the opening rounds, but Canelo remained patient and continued judging the distance. A perfectly timed right hand ended the contest in the sixth round.

Canelo then returned to light-middleweight to meet Liverpool’s Liam Smith. A sustained body attack produced three knockdowns, with the final left hook ending the contest in the ninth round.

Across his career, Álvarez has faced numerous leading British fighters, including Matthew Hatton, Ryan Rhodes, Amir Khan, Liam Smith, Rocky Fielding, Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and John Ryder. Those contests have made him a particularly familiar figure to UK boxing audiences.

Three Contests with Gennady Golovkin

Canelo’s first fight with Gennady Golovkin took place in September 2017. Golovkin entered with an unbeaten record and a reputation as one of boxing’s most destructive punchers. Canelo used counter-punching and movement, while Golovkin applied pressure behind a strong jab.

After 12 rounds, the judges returned a split draw. The result generated enormous debate and ensured that a rematch would become one of boxing’s most anticipated contests.

The second meeting took place one year later. Álvarez spent more time standing his ground and engaging Golovkin in the centre of the ring. Canelo received a majority decision after another closely contested fight, becoming the unified middleweight champion.

The rivalry concluded with a third contest in September 2022. Canelo entered as the undisputed super-middleweight champion and controlled most of the early and middle rounds. Golovkin rallied late, but Álvarez secured a unanimous decision to complete the trilogy with two wins and one draw.

Conquering Four Weight Divisions

In December 2018, Canelo moved to super-middleweight and stopped Liverpool’s Rocky Fielding with repeated body punches in the third round. He returned to middleweight to defeat Daniel Jacobs before pursuing a far more ambitious challenge.

Álvarez moved up to light-heavyweight to face WBO champion Sergey Kovalev in November 2019. Kovalev attempted to control the contest with his jab, but Canelo continued applying pressure. A combination in the eleventh round produced the knockout and made Álvarez a champion in his fourth weight division.

Canelo’s focus then moved to becoming the undisputed super-middleweight champion. He began by defeating Liverpool’s Callum Smith for the WBA and Ring titles in December 2020. Álvarez overcame Smith’s height and reach advantage by moving inside, attacking the body and controlling the pace.

After stopping Avni Yıldırım, Canelo faced unbeaten WBO champion Billy Joe Saunders in front of an enormous Texas crowd. Saunders’ southpaw movement produced an interesting tactical contest, but an Álvarez uppercut caused an eye injury that led to the fight being stopped after eight rounds.

Caleb Plant held the remaining IBF championship. Their November 2021 contest reached the eleventh round before Canelo scored two knockdowns and completed the stoppage. The result made him the first four-belt undisputed champion in super-middleweight history.

Bivol, Guadalajara and Undisputed Status Regained

Another move to light-heavyweight resulted in a points defeat against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. Bivol’s speed, work rate and control of distance earned him the decision, but Canelo remained champion at super-middleweight.

Following wrist surgery and the third Golovkin fight, Álvarez returned to his home region of Jalisco to face Britain’s John Ryder. Canelo dropped the resilient Londoner and retained his championships by unanimous decision.

He next outpointed Jermell Charlo, the undisputed light-middleweight champion who moved up two divisions for the opportunity. Canelo scored a knockdown and controlled the contest with pressure and body punching.

Álvarez then handed Jaime Munguía his first professional defeat before overcoming unbeaten Edgar Berlanga. When he defeated William Scull in May 2025, Canelo regained the IBF championship and became undisputed at super-middleweight for a second time.

The Terence Crawford Superfight

Canelo defended the undisputed championship against unbeaten Terence Crawford at Allegiant Stadium in September 2025. Crawford had already achieved undisputed status in two divisions and moved up to super-middleweight for the biggest challenge of his career.

Crawford’s movement, switching and precise combinations earned him a unanimous decision after 12 rounds. The defeat left Canelo without a championship for the first time in approximately a decade, but he confirmed that he intended to continue boxing.

Álvarez’s record stands at 63 victories, three defeats and two draws, with 39 stoppage wins. He has won championships at light-middleweight, middleweight, super-middleweight and light-heavyweight while becoming undisputed at 168 pounds twice.
