Franco Baresi - The Greatest Number 6

Franco Baresi has died at the age of 66, AC Milan has confirmed. It is difficult to overstate what he meant to the game he played for two decades, and to the club he never once left.

Baresi signed for AC Milan as a teenager and stayed for his entire career — more than 700 appearances and 20 seasons in the same red and black shirt, an almost unthinkable loyalty by the standards of modern football, let alone the game he played in. He wore the captain's armband for both Milan and Italy, and the number 6 shirt he made his own has since been retired by the club in his honour.

The complete defender

Baresi is remembered as one of the finest defenders — many would argue the finest libero — the sport has produced. Alongside Alessandro Costacurta and under Arrigo Sacchi's Milan, and later Fabio Capello's, he was the last line of a defence that redefined how a back line could dominate a match, reading the game a full pass ahead of the forwards it was facing down. He played across a golden Milan era alongside Marco van Basten, Frank Rijkaard and Ruud Gullit, anchoring a side that won three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups, three European Super Cups, six Serie A titles and four Italian Super Cups.

For Italy, Baresi captained the national side and was a fixture of the Azzurri defence through the late 1980s and 1990s. His most famous international moment carries the bittersweet mark of that career: recovering from knee surgery in barely three weeks to play the 1994 World Cup final against Brazil, before missing his effort in the penalty shootout that decided it. It said everything about him that he played that final at all.

A standing beyond statistics

Numbers alone don't explain why Baresi is spoken of the way he is. Fabrizio Romano, the transfer journalist whose word carries weight across the game, called him "an absolute legend of football and of AC Milan and Italy." That is not hyperbole reserved for the day of his passing — it is the settled view of a career that shaped how the position of defender, and of libero specifically, has been understood ever since.
