Andrea Pirlo grew up in Brescia, in the north of Italy, and came through the youth ranks at his local club before catching the eye of Italy's biggest sides. After spells at Reggina and Inter Milan, he joined AC Milan in 2001. Manager Carlo Ancelotti saw what others had missed. He repositioned Pirlo as a deep-lying playmaker and the football world took notice. Within two years, he was a Champions League winner.

At AC Milan, Pirlo became the engine of one of the finest club sides of the modern era. He collected two UEFA Champions League titles in 2003 and 2007, alongside two Serie A championships. He played alongside Kaka, Clarence Seedorf, Gennaro Gattuso and Paolo Maldini. In that company, Pirlo was the conductor. His passing range was extraordinary. He made the game look slower than it was and better than it seemed.

Pirlo wore the Italy shirt with the same quiet authority he brought to everything else. He earned 116 caps for the Azzurri. His defining moment came at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Italy won the tournament and Pirlo was at the heart of everything. He controlled midfield throughout the competition and helped deliver a fourth World Cup title for his country. At Euro 2012, he delivered one of the great tournament performances before Italy fell to Spain in the final.

In 2011, Pirlo joined Juventus as a free agent and promptly proved every doubter wrong. Over four seasons in Turin, he won four consecutive Serie A titles. He moved to New York City FC in 2015 before retiring from playing in 2017, leaving behind a legacy few midfielders can match.
