Andrea Pirlo won two Champions Leagues with AC Milan, the first in 2003 against Juventus and the second in 2007 against Liverpool, establishing himself as one of the great deep-lying playmakers in the history of the European game. His ability to see a pass before anyone else had located the ball, his range of distribution and his dead-ball technique made him one of the most influential midfielders of his era — and he achieved all of it while appearing to operate at three-quarters pace.

Pirlo's years at Milan were where the player the world came to admire was fully formed. Playing as the regista, the deep-lying conductor who dictated tempo from in front of the back four, he orchestrated two Serie A titles and those two Champions League victories. His ability to bypass the press, find the killer pass and arrive in the right position without sprint made him unique. Carlo Ancelotti understood exactly how to use him, and the results were some of the finest football Milan have played in the modern era.
