Origins: From Newspaper Column to HBO

Sex and the City started life on the page. Candace Bushnell wrote a column for The New York Observer, collected in a 1996 book of the same name, and Darren Star adapted it for HBO. The pilot aired on 6 June 1998, with Sarah Jessica Parker as columnist Carrie Bradshaw, Cynthia Nixon as lawyer Miranda Hobbes, Kristin Davis as optimist Charlotte York and Kim Cattrall as PR powerhouse Samantha Jones.

Behind the Scenes

New York was always the fifth lead. The brownstone at 66 Perry Street in the West Village became famous as the outside of Carrie's apartment, even though the interior was a set at Silvercup Studios in Long Island City. Fans still flock there, and in January 2025 the city approved a gate to protect residents.

Fashion mattered just as much - the costumes won an Emmy - and Sarah Jessica Parker also served as an executive producer.
