From the Netherlands to the Highlands
The Traitors is based on the Dutch show De Verraders, which premiered in 2021. Studio Lambert brought the format to the BBC, setting it at Ardross Castle in the Scottish Highlands with Claudia Winkleman as host. Players complete missions to build the prize pot while trying to find the hidden Traitors among them.
Each night the Traitors meet in secret to "murder" a Faithful, and each day everyone gathers at the round table to vote out the player they suspect. If any Traitors make it to the end, they take the whole prize; if only Faithfuls remain, they share it. That simple mix of trust, bluffing and teamwork is what keeps viewers guessing.

A BAFTA-Winning Hit
The first series in 2022 was an instant success, and in 2023 the show won the BAFTA for Reality and Constructed Factual, with Winkleman also winning for Entertainment Performance. Her cosy knitwear became a talking point too, with fans snapping up her jumpers.

Traitors Triumph
Series two in 2024 ended with Traitor Harry Clark taking the whole pot, while series three in 2025 saw Faithfuls Jake Brown and Leanne Quigley share the prize. The fourth series finale on 23 January 2026 was won by Traitors Rachel Duffy and Stephen Libby.
The Celebrity Traitors
The Celebrity Traitors launched in October 2025, and Alan Carr won as a Traitor, with £87,500 going to his chosen charity, Neuroblastoma UK. In 2026 the celebrity series won the BAFTA for Reality, and Carr's win took the Memorable Moment award. Series two began on BBC One on 1 October 2026, airing on Thursday and Friday evenings across ten episodes.

Behind the Scenes
Studio Lambert also makes the US version for Peacock, hosted by Alan Cumming, which has won Emmy awards of its own. The BBC's 2026 deal means both the main show and the celebrity edition will continue until at least 2030.
